Announcing our NEW online backup service!
We have made the decision to terminate our contract with Livedrive, and to replace it with a much more advanced backup service. This article provides details about that decision and the steps you need to take.
In accordance with our previous terms of service, located here, we are providing a 3 month notice before the contract with LiveDrive is terminated. This will allow ample time for our customers to transition to a new plan, without loss of protection.
Why are we making the change?
There are several reasons that have led to this change.
- While Livedrive is attractive, in that it offers unlimited backup, the vast majority of our customers have less than 10 GB of data they are backing up; many of them have fewer than 5 GB. Paying for an unlimited backup means customers are actually paying to help cover costs of other customers with signficant amounts of data.
- When a large file, such as an Outlook file or a Quickbooks file, is changed, Livedrive is unable to backup the part that has changed. Rather, Livedrive has to back up the entire contents of the file, which increases bandwidth, and potentially slows down the computer.
- If a file is being backed up by Livedrive when a user tries to access it, they are unable to do so. This is because Livedrive does not use a technology called “VSS”, that allows the file to be in use while it is being backed up.
- Perhaps most importantly, Livedrive does not provide us any way to monitor the backup itself. It is entirely the responsiblity of our users to know if the file is being backed up. With our emphasis on our Managed Service and Monitoring package, it became imperative that we find a solution that we were able to monitor.
How will this change happen?
There are various options available to you. You can, of course, simply sign up for your own online backup service. There are many companies out there that offer backup services, such as Mozy Pro, Carbonite, and even purchasing directly from Livedrive. Most of these are companies that provide unlimited storage, and typical costs are around $60.00 per year, or about $5.00 per month. If you decide to use one of these services, you simply uninstall the Livedrive software, sign up for the new service, and install and configure it on your machine. We will, of course, be happy to help and we will not charge the labor costs should you choose to move to another service that we do not sell.
We are adding a service through the company called “Cloudberry”. They are a highly rated company and their software will allow us to monitor your backup, it will backup files that are in use, it can back up only the changed portion of files, and the charge is generally based on the amount of data that you are backing up. That way, if you are only backing up a small amount of data, you pay a lot less than someone backing up multiple videos, songs, pictures, and more.
In this case, too, we will assist you in the changeover. Simply call the shop (866-992-6568) or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will find a time that is convenient for you to bring in your computer for us to do the changeover. If you are on our managed service plan, we can even remote in and do the changeover without your having to bring the machine in.
But didn’t I pay for a full year of service?
We bill for Livedrive on an annual basis. Our terms of service specify that if we decide to break the contract, we will refund you a pro-rated amount of the charge based on how far into your contract year you are. This refund, of course, can readily be applied to the new service.
OK – so what will this cost?
Remember – the pricing is based on the amount of data you need to back up. The chart below shows the available plans and pricing. Most customers will likely be in one of the first two plans.
How will I be billed?
Because there may be times that customers find they need to upgrade to a larger package, we decided not to bill on an annual basis. But it also seemed that the amounts were small enough that billing on a monthly basis didn’t make sense. Ultimately, we decided to set up recurring invoices for every 3 months for the package you have chosen. An email will be sent with an invoice, and you may send a check, stop in the shop to make a payment, or simply use the online payment link through Paypal to make your payment. Please note that you do NOT need an actual Paypal account to make the payment online. You may simply enter your credit card information securely into Paypal.
Tell me again what I get out of this?
First and foremost, you get the peace of mind that we know your backups are working correctly. If problems develop that we cannot resolve, we will contact you to discuss the best option. The most likely scenario is simply that your backup space is too small, and we can upgrade that space, or assist you in deleting files you no longer need.
Second, you get a robust backup package that will not have issues with large files, or with files that are in use.
Finally, you have the comfort to know that your precious pictures, your documents, your financial records, or whatever else is important to you is backed up securely and safely.
